INDIRECT QUESTIONS
r6s4u
We use indirect questions to make requests/ask for information in a polite way.
Instead of saying, 'What time is it?' we can say, 'Could you tell me what time it is?'
➡️ MAKING INDIRECT QUESTIONS:
An indirect question has 3 parts:
- An introductory phrase.
- If/whether or a question word: who/where/why/what/when/how, etc. (as appropriate)
- The question in statement form.
➡️ Examples of introductory phrases:
Could you tell me...?I wonder...Do you know...?I was hoping...I'd like to know...I'm not sure...etc.
➡️ Statements
In statements, the subject comes before the verb. The auxiliaries do/does/did are not used.
(Where is he?) Could you tell me where he is?(When did he go?) Could you tell me when he went?
It's incorrect to say, 'Could you tell me where is he?'It's incorrect to say, 'Could you tell me where did he go?'
SOME EXAMPLES:
